Freckles

Science of Freckles.webp

Freckles, also called sunspots, are small brown or black marks often appearing on areas like the face, neck, and arms after exposure to sunlight or UV rays. They are primarily genetic and more common in individuals with lighter skin tones. For some, freckles are minimal and not very noticeable, while others may experience more extensive facial coverage.

Freckles are often inherited and frequently appear in individuals with red hair, though they can also be found in people with fair skin tones. These spots develop due to prolonged UV radiation or sun exposure and may become more noticeable after extensive sun exposure, like during a beach trip. They result from increased melanin production by melanocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis. Due to their depth, freckles are often resistant to topical treatments.

What is the treatment for Freckles?

The QSNdYAG laser is the treatment of choice for freckles.

Can the Freckles be removed permanently?

Existing Freckles respond well to QSNdYAG laser. However, periodic maintenance laser treatment sessions need to be done to address freckles that appear after the treatment.

How can one stop freckles from appearing?

Freckles are prone for recurrences. However, the regular application of a suitable sunscreen lowers the rate of appearance of new freckles.

Does applying skin lightening creams help deal with freckles?

The depth of the pigmentation in freckles is such that topical creams cannot reach it. Therefore, skin lightening creams are seldom useful in dealing with freckles.
