Triggers for Acne

Understanding what is triggering one’s acne problems is important to be able to manage it effectively. Good trigger management translates into an acne free period.

Puberty

Few manage to escape the acne problems that puberty brings with it. The androgen spike during adolescence causes an increase in the amount of sebum produced by the sebaceous glands – the first step in the pathogenesis of acne. Almost everybody stops having acne after they are 25 once the androgen levels settle down a bit.

High glycemic index food

Foods high in simple sugars cause a rapid increase in blood insulin levels. This surge in insulin stimulates the production of sebum, an oily substance in the skin, which can lead to clogged pores and acne. Junk foods, often packed with refined sugars and unhealthy fats, are common culprits. Consuming these foods regularly can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to increased sebum and inflammation, both of which contribute to breakouts. To maintain clearer skin, it's essential to limit sugary and processed foods, opting for a balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables instead.

Cosmetics

Facial products can sometimes clog the pores of the skin's oil-producing glands, leading to a buildup of sebum or oil within these glands. When pores are blocked, the trapped oil can create an ideal environment for bacteria, causing inflammation and acne. Heavy or non-comedogenic skincare products, makeup, and sunscreen are common culprits. To reduce the risk of breakouts, it's important to choose products labeled as non-comedogenic, which are formulated to avoid clogging pores. Proper cleansing routines can also help maintain clear skin by removing excess oil, dirt, and product residue from the skin's surface.

Polycystic Ovarian Disease

This condition affects women. It is characterised by the presence of

  • acne

  • irregular menstrual cycles

  • obesity

  • hirsutism (presence of hair on the face).

Insulin resistance – More fat in the body means more insulin circulating in the blood. This causes all of the 4 symptoms of PCOD.

Losing weight, therefore, is usually enough to overcome all of the symptoms of PCOD.

Take home message
